Anxiety, marked by overthinking and excessive worry, creates a mental barrier that hinders effective self-expression. We recognize how anxiety-induced hesitation and fear of judgment impede communication and self-disclosure

Its goal is to explore solutions and foster a more open and supportive dialogue about mental health, addressing the intricate relationship between anxiety, self-expression, and environment in different people.

Exploring Environments and Anxiety Perspectives

Recognizing misconceptions about anxiety and its link to our surroundings, we wanted to explore this often-overlooked topic around the connection between anxiety and the environment.

The background of this project would revolve around the question of:

How different environments shape people's emotions, and how can delving into personal stories help us grasp the diverse facets of anxiety through the lens of individuals' experiences?

Through this project we aim to bridge the gap in understanding how environments impact our emotions, particularly in shaping anxiety experiences. By illustrating how these surroundings influence anxiety, we wanted to increase empathy and comprehension for the diverse experiences individuals face in different environments.

By mapping these intricate connections, our intent is to provide a comprehensive insight into how different environments shape perceptions, triggers, and soothing environments associated with anxiety. Ultimately, this seeks to raise awareness and foster empathy toward the multitude of experiences associated with anxiety across diverse environments

Design decisions

Our visual style draws inspiration from the subjective experience of anxiety often described as a sensation of being "trapped," encapsulating this feeling through visuals resembling tangled threads and chaotic elements, mirroring the complexity of anxious thoughts.

Using data-derived particles, we overlay these visuals to project the diverse visualisations of anxiety collected from our surveys. Our website serves as an engaging platform, allowing visitors to explore various renditions of anxiety and their contextual backgrounds. The decision to blend anxiety and calm visually arose from wanting to contrast these different emotions in one artwork.

This blending aims to show how these feelings coexist in human experiences. Layering these opposing emotions represents the complex interplay between anxiety and tranquility, offering viewers a deeper understanding of how emotions are interconnected.

This choice invites contemplation on the delicate balance between these contrasting feelings, encouraging viewers to explore their own emotions and find connections within themselves. .

The design prioritises simplicity, focusing on the generative art that depicts emotions. Colours are extracted from participants' environment descriptions of the places that make them anxious and calm, adding depth and intrigue to the visual experience. Additionally, we've incorporated audio generated from text prompts, enhancing the emotional connection relating to each narrative. This approach aims to offer an immersive and cohesive portrayal of diverse anxiety experiences, inviting audiences to connect with individual stories in a meaningful way.

Challenges

Our journey encountered numerous challenges, primarily arising from frequent shifts in ideas and topics across various categories, mediums, and themes, from beautifying insecurities to utilising personality surveys, and personality to emotions. This continuous process of brainstorming made it challenging to create a strong concept idea, which led to creative blocks.

Our initial ideas lacked a strong connection to the data, often remaining too abstract to engage with the audience effectively, making them seem less interesting. Recognizing these issues, we sought feedback and guidance, engaging in weeks of consultations to refine our approach.

The pivotal shift came as we realized how to create our outcome more in a data-centric and personalized direction, aiming to highlight the diverse narratives of anxiety.

Our objective was to showcase the individualized journeys through their version of anxiety, emphasizing how the environment plays a part in their emotions.

To create a more engaging and interesting outcome with our audience, we used the elements of visuals, audio elements, and narratives, creating an immersive experience that resonates deeply with viewers, inviting them to engage and empathise with each unique person's story.

Feedback

The feedback we received from both lecturers and friends played an important role in refining our project into something more captivating and engaging. The insights gathered over the past few weeks profoundly shaped our final outcome, elevating it to a much better and more well-concepted version.

Sharing our work with friends resulted in an overwhelmingly positive response. They appreciated our approach in integrating visuals, audio, and narratives to establish a deep connection with the audience, allowing them to understand the essence of each story.

The straightforward concept of our visuals and the interactive format, which enable the audience to choose and delve into each story along with audio and narratives that are determined by each person’s story, ensured clear and direct communication of our intended messages.

This exchange of feedback that we collected over the past few weeks significantly enhanced the overall impression of our project outcomes, contributing to a more impactful and concepted direction of the topic.

Achievements

Through this process, we've witnessed remarkable growth and unexpected explorations across different mediums like p5.js, TouchDesigner, and text prompts—areas we hadn't initially considered. The outcomes we've achieved now prove how feedback and communication within teamwork profoundly shaped our concept, guiding our improvements and clarifying our direction.

While words can't capture the challenges of our early brainstorming sessions, including last-minute considerations for a complete re-do (for which we are grateful that we ended up not doing it), we're proud of our achievement in delivering a final outcome that we're truly satisfied within just less than a week before submission.

The failed attempt and process shape our outcome and process of ideation. Despite the rush, this process has not only generated a valuable outcome but also allowed us to grow individually and as a cohesive team, leaving us with a memorable and impactful experience.
