We broke down the process into 3 steps,

Collecting data and determine
how it effects our parameters

  • Generating visuals, audio,
    and website collaterals

  • Building our
    installation setup

  • Proposal, background

The design concept aims to establish personalised generative art that allows for communication and expression of emotions among individuals. It is specifically tailored for those facing mental health challenges, as their moods tend to fluctuate.

Recognising that some individuals struggle to articulate their emotions and needs, the proposed graphic system will be an abstract and poetic way of conveying their emotional states during their process of anxiety. Additionally, this initiative seeks to raise awareness and promote understanding of the needs of individuals grappling with mental health issues.

    Proposed approach

We're implementing a thorough research and testing phase to ensure the effectiveness of our system. By creating personalized visuals representing individual experiences of anxiety through their eyes, we'll assign colors to environmental factors influencing emotions.

Using Touch Designer, we generate graphics reflecting diverse environments tied to feelings, integrating user feedback and physiological data. This comprehensive approach aims to offer a uniquely personalized outcome for each anxiety story, crafting a deeply impactful and authentic representation of their journey, leaving a lasting impression.

    Proposed objective

By highlighting that anxiety can affect anyone, the goal is to raise awareness and emphasise that they are not alone in their struggles. Through exploring anxiety in various settings, the project seeks to foster understanding, break down stigma, and encourage open conversations about mental health. Ultimately, it's about showcasing the shared human experience and promoting a sense of community and support.

    Data collected

We gathered data to create visualizations illustrating how individuals perceive anxiety in relation to their surrounding environments and shed light on the intricate interplay between external settings and internal emotional landscapes.

From a survey gathered through Google Forms, we collected their names, ages, data of places that make them anxious and calm, BPM through various conditions, their own interpretation of anxiety, and things that trigger their anxiety through various senses (visual, audio, and touch).

Utilizing this data, we adjust the visual parameters specific to each individual, creating personalized visuals that cater to different subjects and environments.

"Walking into that hospital brought a rush of feelings Iā€™d rather forget. The smell, beeping machines, and the sterile white halls, they spiked my anxiety and hit me like a ton of bricks. Memories flooded back, my mind flashed back to that day, losing someone so close."

    Artefact

The artefact is an interactive installation that showcases personalised visuals representing individuals' anxiety experiences based on their responses to a comprehensive survey by blending the visual of their calm and anxious state. Through meticulous ideation, creation, and documentation, we crafted visuals using Touch Designer, aligning them with each participant's anxiety triggers and calming environments.

The intention was to raise awareness about mental health by offering a personalised and immersive experience, highlighting the unique nuances of anxiety journeys for each person. The process involved extensive testing, interactions, and documentation to ensure authenticity and impactful storytelling.

"Out in the open sea, I felt super anxious while snorkeling. Looking down, I couldn't see what was swimming below. My heart raced, feeling scared of what might be there. Every shadow made me more afraid, I just wanted to get back to land where things felt safer."

"Everytime I was about to walk into a piano exam room years ago when I used to take piano lesson. My anxiety started right when I reached a room/space where other peers were queueing to be examined also. The worst kind of this anxiety kicked in once I entered the real exam room where it was usually dark."

    Conclusion

Bringing together visuals, audio, and narratives within our personalized generative art installation was straightforward and engaging. Countless attempts and failures shaped our journey, leading us to a concept aimed at communicating the intricacies of emotions, especially during moments of anxiety.

Our approach sought to break barriers to expressing emotions, creating a representation that resonates deeply with individuals facing mental health challenges. Through this process, we aimed not just to raise awareness but also to foster understanding and encourage conversations around mental health

This artefact serves as a visual testament to the intricate interplay between environments and emotions, fostering empathy and understanding for diverse experiences with anxiety.
